In this unit we talk about
our unique selves and the many differences in people.
Tolerance and self
esteem will be stressed during the classroom presentations.
Some ideas for Parents:
·
Everyone
share what animal they would like to be and why.
·
Go
rock hunting. Find a rock that reminds you of yourself. All share.
·
Everyone
put his or her name at the top of a blank piece of paper. Pass the papers to
the left. Everyone write one thing they like about that person then pass on to
the left until the original person receives their paper back.
HAVE FUN WITH IT!!

UNIT II FEELINGS AND
FRIENDSHIP
In this unit we talk
about feelings and what makes a good friend.
Then we learn about
good communication skills, including conflict resolution and problem solving.
Parents can help their children by practicing
“I statements” with them.
I feel _______________ Instead of “You make me mad.” “I feel angry when______”
When ______________
Because ____________ Try it and see how much less conflict your
family will experience. Good Luck!
I want ______________
During this unit we
talk about character traits that we all want to develop such as trustworthiness,
respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
The character animals
representing each trait are fun, and the puppet videos about the Popcorn Kids
who are learning about having character
help the elementary
students apply what they learn.
During this unit we
talk about doing well in school, staying safe, and saying no to drugs and
alcohol.
The key message is - “MAKING GOOD CHOICES FOR YOURSELF”
Parents can help by:
·
spending
time helping your children with their homework. Help them to learn good study
skills at home.
·
being
open with your children about the effects of drugs and alcohol. Practice with
them on how to say no.

UNIT V
CAREER PLANNING
4th and 5th
grade students
are taught a career awareness unit called “Making the Link” which links school
habits and skills to the world of work.
Each student is a
member of an office group that creates a company and chooses a product or
service their company will sell.
Then they choose a name
for their company, elect officers, create a motto, and develop a marketing
plan.
Within these office
groups they learn about:
· punctuality and time
management /organization
· goal setting
· responsibility
· learning from mistakes
· testing skills
· learning styles
· paying attention and
listening skills
· career awareness.
The 6th, 7th
and 8th graders will be talking about career planning as follows:
·
They
will be using the internet to do an interest inventory and a personality test.
Then they will match these to jobs.
·
They
will then research these jobs for educational and training requirements,
schools and cost, salary paid, and skills needed.
·
This
will help the students plan for their high school classes.
·
Each
student will create a career profile that will be kept in a file and added to
each year until they graduate from 8th grade when they will take it
with them to high school.
·
Then
we talk about specific careers and occupations through classroom activities and
guest speakers.
Parents can help by:
·
talking
to your children about your own jobs and careers. What kind of preparation did
it take? What’s the job like?
